Avolon and Akasa Air Finalize Sale-Leaseback Deal for Seven Boeing 737-8200 Aircraft
Avolon and Akasa Air have agreed on a sale-leaseback transaction for seven Boeing 737-8200 aircraft, allowing the Indian carrier to optimize its financial resources while maintaining operations. This deal strengthens their existing partnership and supports Akasa Air's growth in India's competitive low-cost aviation market.
Leasing company Avolon and Indian low-cost carrier Akasa Air have reached an agreement for a sale-leaseback arrangement involving seven Boeing 737-8200 aircraft. The transaction, announced on August 14, 2026, enables Akasa Air to free up capital while retaining operational control of the aircraft, which are part of its existing fleet. ## Financial Flexibility Through Sale-Leaseback By selling the aircraft to Avolon and leasing them back, Akasa Air gains financial flexibility without disrupting its flight operations. This strategy allows the airline to allocate resources more efficiently while continuing to utilize the Boeing 737-8200, a high-density variant of the 737 MAX 8. Although certified for up to 210 passengers, Akasa Air configures its fleet with 197 seats in a single-class cabin. ## Strengthening a Longstanding Partnership Avolon has been a key partner for Akasa Air since the airline's early days. Between December 2022 and January 2023, shortly after its launch, Avolon delivered five standard Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft to the carrier. The latest deal reinforces their collaboration, supporting Akasa Air’s expansion in India’s aviation market. ## Supporting Growth in India’s Low-Cost Aviation Sector Despite being smaller than India’s two dominant airlines, IndiGo and the Air India group, Akasa Air has established itself as the third-largest player in the country’s air travel market. The Boeing 737-8200, with its cost-efficient per-seat economics, aligns with Akasa Air’s strategy to meet the rising demand for affordable air travel in India. The airline currently operates 17 Boeing 737-8200s, all configured with 197 seats. This transaction underscores the importance of strategic financial arrangements in supporting the growth of airlines in competitive markets.
