The aviation industry is witnessing significant investments in hypersonic technology, with Castelion raising $1 billion in Series C financing at a $13 billion valuation. This funding will enable the company to reach maximum production rate for its Blackbeard hypersonic strike missile and fund two further weapon lines.

## Background on the Funding The funding round combines $800 million in equity with $250 million in committed financing for a revolving credit facility. Notable investors include JPMorganChase's Strategic Investment Group, Andreessen Horowitz, and funds managed by Carlyle, who co-led the equity portion. Other investors, such as Lightspeed Venture Partners and T. Rowe Price Associates, also participated in the funding round.

The Department of Defense has expressed interest in Castelion's hypersonic technology, announcing a production framework agreement with the company. According to the agreement, the Department of Defense will award a two-year multi-year procurement contract for a minimum of 500 Blackbeard missiles annually once Castelion completes testing and validation. The contract has options extending up to five years, with plans to purchase more than 12,000 missiles over five years.

## Production Expansion Castelion plans to commit hundreds of millions of dollars to expand its production facility in New Mexico, known as Project Ranger. The company has already invested more than $250 million in the facility and has secured over $500 million in US military contracts over the past 18 months. Some notable contracts include a $49.9 million award from the Navy in February 2026 and a $105 million contract to integrate Blackbeard onto the F/A-18 Super Hornet in April 2026.

## Future Developments Part of the funding will be used to develop a longer-range precision-strike weapon that reuses Blackbeard components and manufacturing methods. Castelion is also working on an air and missile defense system, aimed at providing greater magazine depth at lower cost. The company will face competition from other defense contractors, such as Lockheed Martin, which has unveiled its Next Generation Glide Body, and Ursa Major, which has pitched its HAVOC missile on an affordability argument.

The following table summarizes some of the key contracts awarded to Castelion: | Contract | Value | Date | | --- | --- | --- | | Navy contract | $49.9 million | February 2026 | | F/A-18 Super Hornet integration | $105 million | April 2026 | | Pre-production prototypes | $23.4 million | June 2026 |
