Alaska Airlines is canceling seven routes and reinstating a popular intra-California flight. The changes involve seasonal cuts to Mexico, the end of two services from Santa Rosa, and the return of a San Jose-Los Angeles connection with a larger aircraft.

Three Puerto Vallarta Routes Dropped

Alaska Airlines will not resume three seasonal routes to Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) in 2027. The affected services are from Puerto Vallarta to Sacramento, St. Louis, and New York-JFK. The carrier only began operating these routes last year, typically running them between January and April.

According to scheduled data from Cirium, none of the three routes is currently planned to return. The airline last operated the Puerto Vallarta-JFK and Puerto Vallarta-Sacramento flights in April, while the St. Louis service ended in March.

The JFK slot previously used for the Puerto Vallarta service is reportedly being allocated for a fifth daily flight between Seattle and New York JFK. These cuts are part of a broader reduction in Alaska's capacity in Mexico as it expands its focus on Hawaii. The airline had already removed its Puerto Vallarta-Las Vegas service from its network.

Two California Services Ended

Alaska Airlines is also ending two routes from Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport (STS) in Santa Rosa, California. The carrier is canceling its services from Santa Rosa to Salt Lake City and Santa Rosa to Ontario.

The Ontario service is notable because the oneworld alliance member only launched it in March. This route replaced a connection previously operated by Avelo Airlines, which had canceled it in April 2025 before leaving the airport entirely later last year. Alaska currently operates the Santa Rosa-Ontario service daily using an Embraer E175, but scheduled data shows it ending on October 31.

Furthermore, the airline is dropping its Santa Rosa-Salt Lake City service. Alaska had planned to operate up to a daily flight on this route from November 1 through April 21, 2027, but has now removed it from its schedule.

San Jose-Los Angeles Returns With Larger Plane

In a positive move for California travelers, Alaska Airlines is bringing back its San Jose-Los Angeles route. The airline first launched the service in 2017 but discontinued it in January of this year, citing slower-than-expected new aircraft deliveries in 2026.

The San Jose-Los Angeles service will return on November 1 with four daily flights. A significant change accompanies the reinstatement: Alaska will operate the route with its 173-seat Boeing 737-900ER. Before being discontinued, the airline operated the route with a 76-seat Embraer E175.

The capacity difference between the old and new aircraft is substantial, as shown in the table below.

The reinstated service will therefore offer considerably more capacity. The airline's network adjustments follow its recent announcement of plans to launch seasonal services from Seattle to Athens and Paris in 2027.
