Egypt's military has released photographs showing a Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force YY-20 tanker refueling an Egyptian Air Force Dassault Rafale. This event, part of the Eagles of Civilization 2026 joint exercise, is the first publicly documented case of a Chinese tanker transferring fuel to a Western-built fighter jet.

Senior Colonel Chen Xi, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defense, announced the exercise would run from mid-August to early September 2026. The training encompasses air combat tactics, air superiority operations, combat search and rescue, and force employment drills.

Chinese deployment to Egypt

The Chinese contingent arrived at an Egyptian air base on August 21, 2026, after a flight of nearly nine hours covering over 6,000 kilometers. According to the PLA-affiliated outlet China Military Bugle, the deployed package includes multiple aircraft types, though official numbers are unconfirmed.

Egypt's Armed Forces stated that participating forces have flown joint missions involving attacks on hostile targets and the protection of vital assets, alongside the aerial refueling training. The exact date of the photographed refueling sortie was not specified.

Exercise training details

The Eagles of Civilization 2026 exercise marks the first participation of Egyptian Rafale jets. They are conducting dissimilar air combat training against Chinese J-16 fighters. During the inaugural Eagles of Civilization exercise in 2025, the PLAAF deployed J-10C fighters and a YY-20 tanker refueled Egyptian MiG-29M/M2 aircraft.

Fleet and strategic context

The Egyptian Air Force operates a mixed fleet including U.S.-built F-16s, French Rafales, and Russian MiG-29M/M2s but does not possess its own dedicated aerial refueling tankers.

The PLAAF publicly acknowledged the YY-20, a tanker variant of the Y-20 transport, in July 2022. China is introducing the type to expand its refueling capacity beyond the three Soviet-designed Il-78 tankers it acquired from Ukraine in 2011.

The demonstration occurs amid reports of a potential Egyptian fleet expansion. Citing its sources, French publication La Tribune reported on September 1, 2026, that Cairo had sent Dassault Aviation a request for proposal for 24 additional Rafale aircraft.
