A 36-year-old man breached the perimeter fence at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), Portugal's busiest airport, on Sunday, August 30. The incident occurred at approximately 8:55 AM near Runway 2. The crew of a departing TAP Airbus A321 spotted the male and reported him to air traffic control.

According to the Portugal Resident, the man was medically assessed in hospital after being detained. Airport personnel quickly intercepted him following the report. The individual was then handed over to Portugal's Public Security Police (PSP).

Security Breach Details

The individual climbed over the airport perimeter fence. Initial reports suggest he wanted a 'closer look at airplanes' and was walking calmly on the grass verge between the runway and apron where aircraft are parked. He is seen in video dressed in a light-coloured shirt and dark dress pants. The man was searched and was not carrying a weapon. After his interception, the airport ordered a runway inspection to check for any foreign objects or other hazards that could have been planted. None were found, and he did not put up a fight when approached.

Response And Investigation

Portugal's emergency medical service, INEM, assessed the man before he was transported to a local hospital. The case has since been referred to the Public Prosecution Service (Ministério Público) of Portugal. The breach has ignited discussion around the airport's perimeter security and whether additional intrusion detection services are needed. Questions have been raised about how the individual accessed an active area alongside moving airplanes unnoticed.
