Korean Air has signed a strategic partnership with Thailand's state-owned Thai Aviation Industries (TAI) to collaborate on military aircraft maintenance. The agreement, signed on September 2, 2026, marks the South Korean carrier's latest move into the Southeast Asian defense market.

Under the deal, the two companies will initially focus on depot-level maintenance for the Royal Thai Army's UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters. They plan to expand the partnership to cover other aircraft in the Royal Thai Armed Forces' fleet. Korean Air will also help TAI standardize its maintenance processes and provide technical training for Thai personnel.

Initial focus on Black Hawk fleet

The partnership will begin with work on the UH-60 Black Hawk platform. Korean Air's aerospace division has a long history with this helicopter type. It began producing UH-60s in 1991 and has provided ongoing maintenance support. The company recently secured a major contract to upgrade the helicopters' performance.

Korean Air brings over five decades of military aircraft maintenance experience to the collaboration. Its aerospace division has completed depot-level maintenance and performance upgrades for more than 5,500 aircraft. The division specializes in designing and manufacturing complex aircraft structures, providing comprehensive MRO and upgrade services for military aircraft, and developing advanced drones and space launch technologies.

Combining expertise and local networks

TAI manages maintenance and logistical support for all aircraft operated by the Thai military. The partnership aims to combine Korean Air's technical expertise with TAI's established local maintenance network and infrastructure. This collaboration is expected to improve the operational readiness of Thailand's military aviation assets.

Hyeoncheol Cho, Vice President and Head of Korean Air's Defense Business Department, stated the partnership is a key step. "By combining our military aircraft maintenance expertise with TAI's strong local network, we aim to expand our presence in the regional and global MRO markets," he said.

Korean Air's regional defense push

The agreement with TAI represents a significant expansion of Korean Air's military MRO footprint in Southeast Asia. The move aligns with ongoing investments by nations in the region to maintain and upgrade their defense aviation fleets. The signing ceremony took place at Korean Air's Tech Center in Busan, with senior executives from both companies in attendance.
