United Airlines starts shortest Europe route
United Airlines will launch its shortest European route in 2027, a five-hour, 15-minute flight from Newark to Lajes in the Azores using Boeing 737 MAX 8

United Airlines will launch its shortest European route in June 2027. The new service will connect Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) to Lajes (TER) on Terceira Island in the Azores.
Announced this week as part of a wider European network expansion, the route will be operated three times weekly. United will deploy its Boeing 737 MAX 8 fleet on the corridor, becoming the only US-based airline flying nonstop to Lajes.
Route Performance and Load Factors
It remains to be seen if the new Newark-Lajes route will succeed. Data for existing US-Azores flights shows they tend to be relatively well loaded. According to Cirium, an aviation analytics company, United's existing Newark to Ponta Delgada (PDL) route averaged a load factor of 75.44% in the 12 months to May 2026.
The highest performer was TAP Air Portugal's route from Lajes to San Francisco (SFO). It averaged an 85.17% load factor over the same period, though it operated only 16 rotations compared to United's 114 at PDL. Azores Airlines operates four US routes, with Ponta Delgada to Boston (BOS) being its best performer at 83.99%. The carrier's other load factors are detailed below.
| Route (Airline) | Load Factor (12 months to May 2026) |
|---|---|
| Lajes - San Francisco (TAP Air Portugal) | 85.17% |
| Ponta Delgada - Boston (Azores Airlines) | 83.99% |
| Lajes - New York-JFK (Azores Airlines) | 69.83% |
| Lajes - Boston (Azores Airlines) | 67.82% |
| Ponta Delgada - New York (Azores Airlines) | 66.98% |
Patrick Quayle, United's Senior Vice President of Global Network Planning and Alliances, commented on the expansion. He stated the airline is "making the world feel smaller and connecting cultures at a scale no other airline can match."
United's Short Transatlantic Network
The eastbound Newark-Lajes leg will have a block time as low as five hours and 15 minutes. This makes it United's shortest route to Europe by both distance and time, pushing Newark-Ponta Delgada (five hours, 35 minutes) to second place. The Azores' mid-Atlantic location is key to these short flight times.
A ranking of United's shortest European routes for next summer, based on block times, shows a network heavily focused on the North Atlantic. Keflavík in Iceland features prominently, served from multiple US hubs.
| Rank | Route | Block Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Newark - Lajes | 5h 15m |
| 2 | Newark - Ponta Delgada | 5h 35m |
| 3 | Newark - Keflavík | 5h 40m |
| 4 | Washington - Keflavík | 5h 55m |
| 5 | Chicago - Keflavík | 6h 15m |
| 6 | Newark - Shannon | 6h 25m |
| 7 | Newark - Dublin (DUB) | 6h 40m |
| 8 (tie) | Newark - Funchal | 6h 50m |
| 8 (tie) | Newark - London | 6h 50m |
| 8 (tie) | Newark - Glasgow | 6h 50m |
Flights to Glasgow resumed this year. The carrier's wider expansion leverages its next-generation narrowbody fleet to connect East Coast hubs to secondary European destinations.
