The Royal Netherlands Air Force's first Pilatus PC-7 MKX trainer has flown, marking progress in an eight-aircraft order

The first Pilatus PC-7 MKX for the Royal Netherlands Air Force completed its maiden flight on September 7, 2026. The flight occurred at Buochs Airfield in Switzerland, according to the Dutch Ministry of Defense.

The Netherlands has ordered eight PC-7 MKX aircraft and four simulators. The first aircraft is expected to enter service in May 2027, with the entire package, including training equipment, to be delivered by September 2027.

Production of the trainers formally began in February 2026. The first three aircraft will support testing and the training of instructors and technicians before delivery.

Fleet Renewal and Training Role

The new aircraft will serve the Netherlands' basic military flying course. The ministry stated its existing trainers are nearing the end of their useful lives. The replacement trainers are intended to better prepare students for the modern aircraft they will eventually operate.

The PC-7 MKX targets the earliest stages of military pilot training. Students who may later fly fighters, multiengine aircraft, or helicopters will use it. The aircraft is equipped with Martin-Baker ejection seats.

Aircraft Specifications and Avionics

The aircraft incorporates Garmin G3000 Prime avionics adapted for military training, featuring customizable displays. According to Pilatus, the PC-7 MKX has the following performance specifications:

SpecificationPerformance
Maximum operating speed300 knots indicated airspeed
Maximum climb rate2,675 feet per minute
Maneuvering limits+7 and -3.5 Gs

France's order for the same model will also include a head-up display. Pilatus says this will provide greater commonality with the PC-21 used for later training stages.

European Training Fleet Modernization

The Dutch program is part of a broader European shift to modernize military training fleets. France has selected a package of 22 PC-7 MKX aircraft, with deliveries scheduled for 2027. This forms part of its Mentor 2 program, which includes a 17-year services contract with Babcock France, supported by simulators and computer-based instruction.

France already operates 26 PC-21s for advanced training. Adding the MKX extends Pilatus's role into the basic phase of the French syllabus.

Belgium selected 18 PC-7 MKXs under a 20-year training services agreement approved in November 2025. Aircraft deliveries should begin in 2027, with training planned to start in 2028. That package includes simulators, classroom tools, and mission planning systems, along with facility upgrades at Beauvechain Air Base. Pilatus and Belgian partners will provide long-term infrastructure and operational support, extending the business beyond aircraft sales. The first three Dutch aircraft will now support testing and instructor training.
