Sweden deploys Gripen fighters to Poland for NATO air defense
Sweden has deployed JAS 39 Gripen fighters to support NATO's integrated air and missile defense in Poland, a mission that saw immediate action during a major Russian attack on Ukraine. The deployment, announced September 30, 2026, builds on a previous 2025 mission and aims to protect critical logistics hubs channeling aid to Ukraine.

Sweden has deployed JAS 39 Gripen fighters to support NATO’s integrated air and missile defense in Poland, operating mainly from Sweden with a forward presence in Poland. Defense Minister Pål Jonson announced the deployment on September 30, 2026. The mission contributes to NATO airspace surveillance and helps protect a major logistics hub in southeastern Poland used to move military and civilian assistance to Ukraine.
Gripen jets support Polish air defense during Russian strike
Swedish Air Force Gripen fighters supported Polish air defense operations during a large Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine overnight on October 6-7, 2026. Poland’s Operational Command of the Armed Forces (DORSZ) stated that military aviation operations launched in response to the Russian strikes had ended and that it had recorded no violation of Polish airspace. DORSZ thanked the Swedish Air Force for helping secure Polish airspace. The Gripen fighters are specifically tasked with protecting the Rzeszów-Jasionka logistics hub that channels aid to Ukraine.
Deployment builds on tested 2025 NATO air policing mission
This mission represents Sweden’s second fighter contribution to NATO operations in Poland. It builds on an operational arrangement tested during a 2025 deployment from April through August. Sweden’s government described that 2025 mission as the first time Swedish combat aircraft participated in enhanced NATO airspace surveillance from the territory of another Allied country and under NATO command. During that period, Swedish JAS 39 Gripen aircraft operated from Poland’s 22nd Tactical Air Base at Malbork as part of NATO’s enhanced Air Policing mission. Swedish pilots also supported protection of the airspace around the logistics hub in the Rzeszów region.
Gripen role fits into NATO’s evolving eastern-flank defense strategy
The Gripen’s deployment supports NATO’s shift from traditional air policing to an integrated air and missile defense posture. Poland occupies a central position in NATO’s eastern-flank defense architecture, bordering Ukraine and Belarus. The Rzeszów area is a critical logistics hub. NATO must maintain sufficient surveillance and fighter availability around such infrastructure. In this role, the Gripen’s value lies in adding another fighter force connected to NATO’s wider surveillance, command and control architecture.
NATO’s eastern-flank posture has changed substantially since Russian drones entered Polish airspace in September 2025. The alliance subsequently launched Eastern Sentry, a broader activity bringing together additional fighter aircraft, helicopters, surveillance platforms, and air-defense systems. NATO’s current Integrated Air and Missile Defence approach reflects this evolution, treating air policing as part of a larger network of distributed aircraft, sensors, and ground-based defenses.
Sweden expands Gripen use across multiple NATO theaters
Sweden is increasingly deploying Gripen fighters across geographically distributed NATO missions. This shift places additional importance on aircraft availability, logistics, spare parts, and trained personnel. Recent and concurrent deployments include:
| Mission | Location | Timeframe | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| NATO Integrated Air & Missile Defense | Poland | From October 2026 | Primary base in Sweden, forward presence in Poland |
| Arctic Sentry | Iceland and Greenland region | Announced February 2026 | Contribution to NATO operation |
| Joint Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) | Gulf of Finland | September 2026 | First joint operational ID mission with Finnish fighters |
The Swedish government and defense authorities have not publicly disclosed the exact number of Gripen aircraft assigned to the 2026 deployment in Poland. Sweden will also deploy a Patriot air defense unit of around 100 personnel to Poland from December, with the mission expected to extend into the first half of 2027.
